International Human Rights Day is December 10. The promotion and protection of human rights has been a major preoccupation for the UN since 1945, when its founding nations resolved that the horrors of the 2nd World War should never be allowed to recur.
In 1950, the UN declared that respect for human rights and human dignity "is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world" and members were invited to sign the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. December 10 was pronounced Human Rights Day.
In the Comox Valley, the local Amnesty group is holding a public letter-writing session to mark International Human Rights Day. On Monday, December 14 drop in to Zocalos Cafe any time between 5pm and 7pm and write a letter on behalf of a specific prisoner of conscience. We supply materials, instructions, and stamps. Everyone is welcome.
