CALLING FOR ENTRIES to CVAG’s 3rd Annual Wearable Art Show: $1000 in prizes to be won!

Are you excited about costumes, art and wacky weird wearable sculpture? Then do we have an opportunity for you! The Comox Valley Art Gallery is calling all creative people to submit entries to its 3rd Annual CVAG Wearable Art Show & Competition which takes place mid June 2011. Submissions are due on April 30th – so send in your ideas, concept sketches and drawings! There is $1000 worth of prizes for this year’s most outstanding entries!

What is Wearable Art? Wearable Art is original, one of a kind, often whimsical, innovative or theatrical adornment for the human body. Artists & designers will use any materials such as wood, metal, leather, candy, pop cans, paper, or carpet to build a costume of artistic endeavor. The weirder, wilder and more wonderful, the better! To complement the designs, hair, make-up, shoes & accessories are styled to complete the look.

The first stage is to send in concept drawings by April 30th (or photos, if the art is already completed). A panel will review all the entries and select 35 entries to be a part of the show. Once selected, artists would continue on to create their pieces – they will have until the end of May to complete the works, in time for fittings and rehearsals which take place in June. The activities culminate in a spectacular show which combines elements of a fashion runway, theatre, cabaret and even a little vaudeville!

This unique fundraising event features wearable art in creative live performances. More than a fashion show, The Wearable Art Show & Competition is a performance and exhibition of creative explorations of this body adornment. Performers wear the “art couture” and “perform” the artwork to sounds or music. This fun filled show is followed by an awards ceremony and dance celebration!
